Canine Influenza (Dog Flu)

Overview

Canine influenza, also known as dog flu, is a respiratory infection caused by specific Type A influenza viruses known to infect dogs. This is a relatively new disease in dogs and has been identified in two main strains, H3N8 and H3N2.

Symptoms

  • Coughing (both wet and dry)
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal discharge
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever

Prevention

Vaccination is available for both strains of canine influenza. Regular vaccination is recommended, especially for dogs that frequently come into contact with other dogs in settings like kennels, dog parks, and grooming centers.

Treatment

Treatment typically involves supportive care to keep the dog comfortable and well-hydrated. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent secondary bacterial infections, and anti-inflammatory medications can help reduce fever and pain.
