Leptospirosis

Overview

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can affect many animals, including dogs and humans. It is caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. Dogs can become infected through direct contact with urine from infected animals or a contaminated water source.

Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Shivering
  • Muscle tenderness
  • Increased thirst
  • Changes in the frequency or amount of urination
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Vomiting

Prevention

Vaccination against leptospirosis is the best preventive measure, especially for dogs at higher risk such as those living near or frequently exposed to wildlife and bodies of water.

Treatment

Leptospirosis is treated with antibiotics. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent severe complications like kidney or liver failure.
